screen door

gabriellekai_screendoorOne of my favorite summer time memories as a child is hearing the creak of my grandmother’s screen door opening and slamming shut, followed by the pitter patter of our little feet running in and out of the house.

She would inevitably scold us, “Stay in, or stay out!” but that hardly stopped us.  We’d just laugh head back outside, the screen door slamming shut behind us.  When it was time to eat, she would push the door open slightly, and stick her head out and call for us.  The creaking of the door announcing her presence way before we actually heard her voice.  Oh, I miss her so!

Do you have a favorite summertime memory from your childhood?

Extraordinary detail. Just by looking at this..I can conjure up in my mind the sound of that old screen door swinging open..and clicking itself shut. Such a wonderful summer memory!!

My grandmothers both had those squeaky, prone to slamming doors and it is a sound that must stay in everyone’s memory…the house I grew up in had a loud aluminum screen door that also slammed but in a more metallic way and my mother also said “Stay in or stay out!” Love the photo!

Another fond summer sound memory…the sound of an old radio off in the distance playing a Red Sox game while my father did chores or stretched out on a chaise lounge. Iwasn’t interested in the games in those days but that sound will always stay with me…

I agree with Marcie, just by looking at the image of the door you can picture everything that is going on in your story. Great post!

One of my favorite summertime memories is that of me and my two younger brothers riding our bikes. We treated them like cadillacs! We used to practically stay gone all day long on long bike rides (back when it was safe to do that), then come home (when the street lights came on – another rule), and lock them up w/our combination locks. That’s a precious memory that I treasure – we talk about it often when we get together. :-)

Great picture and great story. My favorite summer memories are from staying at the lake in summer. Sleeping on the couch because there weren’t enough beds, eating s’mores every single night, washing my hair in the lake, waking early to ski. Ahh…
